AMD does it again!

Upgrading from an Athlon 64 3700+ 939 to the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ AM2 shows noticable differences in performance at stock settings. Opening applications seems instant and start up and shut down times are so fast you can't blink or you'll miss them.(I upgraded to Vista along with this processor and, to tell you the truth, Vista runs better than XP as far as I'm concerned. Computer starts up in less than 15 seconds {including motherboard bios screen} and shuts off in less than 6 seconds.)I was able to overclock this processor from 2.6 GHz to 3.0 GHz without adjusting the voltage and it be stable. (I was able to do that due to there being no core multiplier restriction. Make sure your motherboard can do this before you purchase this processor!) I could easily get another .2 GHz out of this processor by messing with the voltage multiplier, still have a stock AM2 heatsink and fan on it, and it be stable. Not only that, but the processor temps were just over room temperature.I haven't tested it, but if you have a very nice aftermarket heatsink and fan or watercooling in your PC, you might be able to get it to overclock further and be stable. I'm some what limited due to the processor being in a micro-ATX case as airflow and space are limited.I dought you can find an Intel chip with this kind of performance at this price.NOTE: This processor is built for the overclocker in mind as it doesn't come with a heatsink and fan. This would be the only con for this product if it could be considered a con.

Great low-power consumption, mid-range CPU

The 5000+ CPU is a great solution for those looking for good performance/price balance. I chose the 5000+ because it provides adequate performance without running so hot as to require special considerations. Its low 64-watt power consumption allowed me to take advantage of the components I already had. For instance an older power supply I had was well suited to its power requirements.You will need to provide your own cooling solution; none is provided with the CPU. Because the chip runs at relatively low temperatures there is no need for extravagant cooling systems; your basic heat-sink and fan combo work fine.The chip uses AM2 pin layout so it's easy to upgrade later to something more exotic.

A black pearl shinning in my case

Pros: Over-clockable, runs at very low temperatures (mine at 33*C in 100% load) which means you can push it far. Great multitasker. 15% performance gain if you run it at 3GHz according to the various tests I had run, and this without even playing with the voltage. Very good at floating point.Cons: No fan (this is to be expected since it's for OCing), I run mine with a cheap $25 Rosewell. 2x512 KB L2 seems a bit low for something made in 2007, this would inevitably affect performance due to latencies.Other: If you don't plan to overclock, may be you should get the Windsor - it would perform better right out of the box and would come with the cooler. No Intel CPU could match the performance/price ratio of this baby. I am very happy with mine.
