Product Description
Brian and Marianita Shilhavy, founders of Tropical Traditions, were the first ones to export Virgin Coconut Oil from the Philippines in 2001. Today, the Gold Label standard is the highest standard for organic Virgin Coconut Oil. This Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil is a truly unrefined coconut oil. This coconut oil is made on Mt. Banahaw from organic coconuts. Coconuts are used fresh (within 24 hours of harvest) from small family farms on Mt. Banahaw and other rural places in Quezon Province, the coconut capital of the Philippines. The volcanic soil of Mt. Banahaw makes these organic coconuts some of the most nutritionally rich coconuts in the world! Testing done in independent laboratories reveals a 50% - 57% content of lauric acid, and higher levels of phenolic antioxidants than most other coconut oils. The fresh coconut meat is shredded (wet milled), and then cold-pressed to make coconut milk. The milk is then fermented for 24-36 hours, and the oil is then separated and filtered from the curds. No chemical or high-heat treatment is used, and this oil contains no trans fatty acids. We do NOT mass produce this oil. It is made by families who are coconut farmers using old-fashioned traditional methods that have been used here for hundreds of years. Our coconut trees and family producers are certified organic according to strict USDA standards. The families who produce the oil are also trained according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards and re-certified each year. This high-grade Virgin Coconut Oil has a long shelf life due to the high anti-oxidant properties. Independent laboratory analysis shows this to be one of the highest quality coconut oils on the market. Today when you buy Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil, you are still buying a coconut oil made by hand and benefiting families in the rural areas of the Philippines where the coconuts grow. All other "virgin" coconut oils are mass produced by machine.

YUCK :(
By JackieLL
After buying two other organic, cold-pressed, virgin brands, both of which smelled and tasted nicely of coconut, I decided to go all out and bought this, thinking it was as good as it came. I guess I thought that because it seems like so much extra work goes into their gold label variety. That wasn't my experience. I opened it (a bit of an undertaking in and of itself with the gallon size) and the first thing I noticed was the smell. I'm not sure how to describe it but "musty" or "fermented" or even "dirty" come to mind. Every time I smell it, I feel myself involuntarily getting that "icky smell" face. :( It didn't taste all that great, either. Left kind of a "yuck" feeling/aftertaste in my mouth.I don't think there's anything wrong with it, nutritionally speaking. So, my dogs will be the recipients of most of this.Upshot: don't buy a gallon for your first purchase unless you 1) already know that you like it or 2) don't mind compromising (e.g., eating it anyway or giving it to your dogs).

Not my favorite
By ynotbid
I love the health benefits of coconut oil. After trying a small jar of another brand which I like (Nature's Way EfaGold), I decided to get this brand as the book written by the owner of Tropical Traditions makes a good case (of course) for this being the best of the best. Should have sampled my sister's jar before ordering this. I don't like the taste or smell of hers or mine, so it can't just be a bad batch. I recently ordered Nutiva, and that tastes great. Anyone want to buy my almost-full gallon?

I want to like it
By Andrew Garcia
I am torn because I want to like this Coconut Oil. The case that TT makes for this oil is compelling but I have to also 'listen" to my instincts. Like others, I use coconut oil daily and have done much research into its health benefits. Like others, I have also had an unpleasant experience with the smell and taste of this coconut oil. 'Gasoline' is the smell that comes to mind. I'm baffled as to why. Nutiva's brand is quite satisfying in taste and smell and so I use it on toast and to saute, bake and I also apply it to my skin. I SO want to know that the TT brand is superior because "dealing" with the unpleasant taste/smell would be something I would be willing to endure. I'm going to try one more time...but not a gallon.
