There are some elements of parka design that this Sessions Mens Leatherneck Snowboard Jacket (size M) doesn't have - but its doesn't matter. If I had one parka to get me from October through April in the Northern Hemisphere, it would be this one.For starters, it doesn't have the "puffy jacket" type insulation - like goose down or special polyester fibers that will provide a barrier to the cold down to minus 40F. It's a good thing it's missing that because a hiker overheats rapidly in virtually any temperature found in the northern United States.Your body when exercising (even just walking briskly) generates a formidable amount of heat. The great thing about this parka/jacket is that you can dump the heat before the sweat it makes soaks your inner clothing and impairs your ability to stay warm and comfortable. This jacket has a huge (12 inch long) zipper opening in each axilla which is shielded by mesh underneath so that the armpit area can vent heat and the moisture from sweat to the outside. Also, it has no insulation in the arms. Or the hood. The body of the jacket has a cream coloured sherpa type insulation about the front of the shoulders. The rest of the trunk of the body is covered by a lighter, dark coloured, liner. Doesn't sound like much, does it?But, importantly, what it does have is a layer of material that stops wind infiltration yet allows the exit of water moisture from sweating. So, you stay comfortable even when hiking vigourously. And there are interior skirts around the neck, wrists, and waist to keep out drafts and snow in case you get dumped in a big snowdrift after being thrown off your off road vehicle or snowmobile. When it is really cold (below 20 degrees Fahrenheit) wear a warm sweater or insulated vest under it. And, in cold weather, always wear moisture wicking longjohn pants and long sleeved shirt. Insulated headgear, mittens, and very thick socks and insulated boots, as well. But, the most important part is this: the Sessions Leatherneck Jacket. You can wear it nearly eight months of the year in cold climates. That's its best feature. Frankly, I like the camo design, too.RECOMMENDED
