This long-standing tradition was continued by writer-traveller Bruce Chatwin who used to buy his moleskines at an old Paris stationery shop in Rue de l'Ancienne Comedie where he would always stock up before embarking on one of his journeys. Over the years he had developed a veritable ritual. Before using them he would in fact number the pages, writing on the inside his name and at least two addresses across the world, and a message promising a reward for anyone finding and returning the notebook in case of it being lost. He even suggested this method to his friend Luis Sepulveda, when he gave him a precious moleskine as a present for a journey they were planning to undertake together in Patagonia. And there was no doubt as to how precious it was, given that at the time even the last moleskine manufacturer, a small family-run firm of Tours, had discontinued production in 1986. 'Le vrai moleskine n'est plus' was the short and curt statement of the owner of the stationery shop where Chatwin had ordered one hundred before leaving for Australia. Despite having literally swept up all the Moleskines he could find, they were not enough. Now, the moleskine is back again. This silent and discreet keeper of an extraordinary tradition, which has been missing for years, has set out again on its journey. A witness to contemporary nomadism, it can once again pass from one pocket to another to continue the adventure. The sequel still waits to be written and its blank pages are ready to tell the story.

My favorite daily planner

I first started using the Moleskine daily planner in 2007 and have already purchased one for 2008. What I love about this is that it combines the quality of the regular notebooks with remarkable functionality. For instance, I utilize it only minimally as a planner but use it primarily as a log for what I have read and seen. Because a lot of my work involves watching TV shows and movies, I like to record precisely what I have watched each day, along with the page counts of the various books I have read in. There are several blank pages at the back and I use these to record how many times I have heard an album all the way through (I have the personal rule that I will not review any album on Amazon unless I have heard it ten times, which partially accounts for why nearly all my record reviews dispense four and five stars -- if I don't like an album I simply don't reach the requisite ten listens). Thus, I use this far more as a diary or work log than as a planner. I've always been blessed with a good memory and rarely find that I need to write down a future appointment or date.Because I use this far more to record what work I have gotten done and because I more work on my own projects more on Saturdays and Sundays than I do during the week, I really love that this planner devotes a whole page to both Saturday and Sunday. Too many planners give a half page to each day, the very days that I actually need more room for than other days.I do, however, write down future appointments and for this the planner is admirable. Again, its layout allows for flexibility. The hours are marked from 8 to 8, but the numbers are so small and unobtrusive as to leave a very light footprint on the page. If you want to use the page differently, you can easily do so.This is one of those few items that I have come to rely upon so frequently that I can't imagine doing without it. Every time I leave the house I have my messenger bag containing book, notebooks, iPod, pens and pencils, and planner. I can't imagine many not being delighted with this. I will add that I used in 2007 the regular sized daily planner, while for 2008 I have purchased the 2008 planner. If you, like me, intend to use this more as a journal than a planner, I would strongly recommend the larger size. While I have not used the 2008 large daily planner, I can tell that it will be of far greater utility. In short, a huge thumbs up.
