4Three years with an Optimus Hiker Plus
By Martin Corrick
I have an Optimus Hiker Plus multifuel stove which I have used for cycle camping and dinghy cruising for three years now. It works pretty well, and is certainly much quicker to boil a kettle than the Trangia alcohol stove that I also have. However it is quite heavy, and in some countries (France for example) it is much easier to get alcool a bruler (methylated spirits) than small quantities of paraffin or petrol (I have not used the Hiker with petrol, only paraffin.) The performance of the Hiker is greatly affected by wind, and it must be sheltered if at all possible. My Hiker has never given any trouble - the self-cleaning jet (operated by a magnet in the stove housing) appears to work perfectly. The Hiker is a very good stove provided you are not looking for the lightest and most compact cooking system, including dishes - the Trangia wins hands-down in that category. The Hiker appears to be more economical on fuel, however.
